Don’t Let Fear Live In Your Bonus Room

We know him well, although I’d have to say I feel like he’s been my best worst friend for most of my adult life.  As a matter of fact I’m pretty sure he’s been living in my bonus room, like that in-law, who has long since over stayed their welcome.  I like to think of fear as a person, a he specifically, because then I can think about doing mean, hurtful things back, like punching it in the face, as Jon Acuff would say, and I’m just too nice of a guy to do that to a woman.

I know you know what I mean.

Fear keeps us locked in a prison of our own creation. And the irony of it all is that we forget that we hold the keys to our freedom.

To be honest with you, I feel like I’m starting to see more and more, just how much fear has stolen from me.  Its like, I’ve finally gotten my bonus room back only to realize that I’m missing a bunch of stuff!

I can see a commercial in there somewhere, like the Direct TV ad “Don’t wake up in a ditch.”  Don’t let fear live in your bonus room, or you’ll end up in a ditch somewhere, or something like that.

That would be awesome!

Come to think of it, that would make a pretty cool sermon series.  I’m sure someone has thought of it already.

The point for all of us is not to expect that we’ll never have to see that relative again, but rather, to know that they aren’t allowed to stay the evening, camping out in our bonus room.

Instead, you should try a different strategy, put ‘em up in a hotel room for example.  After all, fear can be a good thing if we name it and deal with it in healthy ways.

The greatest leaders know that a healthy fear can become a powerful motivator. (you can tweet that, and be awesome)

Maybe it’s time for you to kick that relative out.

Maybe it’s time to stare fear back in the face, name it, do something different.

Maybe this is the invitation you’ve been waiting for to enter the next season of life and make progress towards Creating the Awesome.

You’re not alone!

Question for you:

How can changing the way you view your fear, change the way you react to it?
